Rudi Fischer of Budapest sends this "late comment" to last Monday's
Wilhelmus von Oranien bin ich von deutschem Blut, by Rudolf Fischer;
I generally try to keep up with your blog, albeit I fall behind occasionally.
When I lived in London I made a point of attending most Spurs home games but I have been a supporter since 1952, whereever I lived. On occasion perhaps a lukewarm supporter, exasperated not by lack of success but by a - temporary or prolonged - betrayal of the Glory Game.
Ison Begleitung im Kirchengesang, besteht darin dass der Begleiter (isonar) langgezogene Noten singt während der Kantor (psalt) die Melodie singt. (Tiktin: Rumänisch-Deutsches Wörterbuch 1895) From the same word in Greek.
I quoted a classical Rumanian dictionary, (a) because I can't do Greek script on my keyboard and (b) because I first came across both the word and the sound in Bucharest in 1994 (Stavropoleos Church).
Ed: Thanks, Rudi, but I can't find 'ison' in my English, German nor Modern Greek dictionaries; nor does an Internet search yield anything.
Tottenham won the Double of League and Cup in 1961 with manager Bill Nicholson and Captain Danny Blanchflower. Blanchflower had previously captained Northern Ireland to victory as Home International Champions and to the quarter-finals in the World Cup in Sweden in 1958. He was named English Footballer of the Year twice, in 1958 and 1961. There's a stadium named after Blanchflower in Belfast today.
Danny's brother, Jackie, won international caps for Northern Ireland as well, playing centre-half. Jackie's club was Manchester United. But Jackie was badly injured in the Munich Air Crash. Although Jackie survived, his playing days were over at the age of 24.
Of course, that Spurs team had many more good players. Dave MacKay and Cliff Jones are two that I remember. [The first choice team was Bill Brown, Peter Baker, Ron Henry, Danny Blanchflower, Dave Mackay, Cliff Jones, John White, Bobby Smith, Les Allen and Terry Dyson - see http://www.spursodyssey.com/double/double2.html.
The Llilywhites have just enjoyed one of their most sucessful seasons for some years.
